Overview

Portraits of Compassion is a deeply personal documentary that chronicles the work of my parents, Saul Bromberger and Sandra Hoover, who documented the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and 90s. This film not only captures the essence of their dedication to photojournalism but also serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the crisis.

Challenges & Approach

One of the biggest challenges was to convey the profound impact of the AIDS epidemic through a lens that balances historical context with personal narratives. To achieve this, we integrated archival footage, personal interviews, and their extensive collection of photographs. Our approach was to create a narrative that honors the resilience and compassion of those affected, while also highlighting my parents' commitment to capturing these moments with empathy and respect.

The Result

The documentary features powerful visuals and heartfelt stories that bring to life the struggles and triumphs of individuals during the AIDS epidemic. Through a combination of intimate interviews, historical footage, and stunning photography, Portraits of Compassion paints a vivid picture of a pivotal time in history. The film has been met with critical acclaim, and praised for its emotional depth and historical significance. It stands as a testament to my parent's legacy and their unwavering dedication to documenting the human condition.
